I think the question might refer to the switch near the transmission gear selector. If so, it stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. Basically it just gives you some more power. I believe that it delays the shifts until a higher RPM is reached. Of course this only relates to an automatic transmission, and it will probably decrease your miles per gallon. Engine Coolant Temperature
It is supposed to change the shift pattern. Normal is for the best fuel economy and power is for best performance
malfunction in transmission.
The ECT or the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is a switch. This switch is located on the bottom of the radiator in the 1996 Camry.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but on the 1996 model, when you puch the ECT (electronically controlled transmission) button, the light comes on and your gear shifting ratio changes to a more "high-performance" mode (if that's what you call it!). Does that help?
It can mean the amount of something food ect.
It provides a little more power by changing the transmission shift times to a more aggressive setting. For instance if in normal mode it may shift at 3,500 rpm. With the ECT in power mode, it would probably shift at 4,000 rpm or 4,500 rpm. Setting the ECT to power will however lower your gas mileage.
Its near the gear....a button with ECT written on it...
