What are the advantages and the disadvantages of the GPS and paper maps?

Advantages:
-fast speed
-leads u in right direction
-helps improve mapping skills
-makes navigation easier
-has panic buttons built in
-you can be found easier if in danger or in accident
-plugs into your car cigarette lighter
Disadvantages:
-cellular devices can track other cellular device users
- not very cheap
-people focus on GPS more than road = accidents
-should be used as backup map but used as 1st resource
-needs good care and handling
-external power
-needs batteries (handheld ones)

∙ 12y agoI have a hand held and lap-top connected GPS. The advantages of having either is determining your exact position. While traveling through Albany, GA, I became lost. Looking for a place to pull over and ask directions (late at night) very few places were open. Liquor stores--OUT, bars--OUT, I needed a place that would be knowledgable and safe. I saw a Dominoes delivery place...who better would know their way around town than a Pizza delivery joint? The guy gave me excellent directions...to the hood! OK, I needed a place that was knowledgable, safe and trustworthy. I saw a cop at a 7-11 and found out I was headed for "gang land" (his words). After that, bought a middle of the road hand held GPS from Wal-Mart, and never again pulled over.
I've also used it on camping and canoeing expeditions. Consider it the "cheaters" map.
The advantages of GPS over a map is 100 fold, GPS is not infoulable though, the military can turn off the satelites or render them "not as accurate" for a number of reasons, most importantly to render enemy GPS guided munitions inoperative. Having an understanding of maps is always a good back up. A friend of mine obtained her private pilots license and innappropriately used GPS for guidance. When the batteries failed, she was lost.
One of the Best Advantage is that Using GPS , one can locate any gps devicce which is connected through satellite .
Almost Every Country uses this technology from crime field to intelligency fields .

∙ 15y agoHaving properly installed GPS unit in the car makes your life much easier in comparison with traditional paper maps. It has a lot of POI (points of interest) in the memory. You never run out of gas or at least will always know what's the distance to the nearest gas station.

∙ 15y agoMy husband is a long haul trucker. The company he works for uses GPS to track the trucks and estimate their arrival times, etc.
It is very helpful for dispatch so that they can co-ordinate unloading and reloading.

Boaters were the first civilians to use GPS extensively for navigation, as dead reckoning is prone to error. Many high-end cars have a GPS navigation system which serves much the same purpose as a marine GPS. Some athletes are turning to GPS to track speed and distance. A few digital cameras have a GPS receiver which records the location where the picture was taken. So far, I've listed only one-way applications. Two-way applications include cell phones when calling the emergency number and vehicle tracking.

∙ 12y agoGPS is used to tell where the location of the reciever is. Each satalite sends out a coded BEEP at known intervals. Once the first BEEP is detected, then when the 2nd is received, there is a straight line bisecting the earth and continuing on in both directions out into space. This line is the only place where those two BEEPs intersect at a given time. It takes a minimum of 4 satalites to provide a full location. A 3rd satalite limits the location to one of 3 places (draw 3 circles that bisect each other, you are at one of those 3 locations). Having a prior idea of where you started allows the GPS unit to deduce where you are with 3 satalite signals. The 4th one cements the location (and altitude) as there is only one place where all 4 BEEPs intersect at a given time.
