Hard water refers to water (H2O) that contains a relatively high concentration of dissolved mineral salts, such as magnesium and calcium. These dissolved salts are often undesirable, as they can precipitate as insoluble solids, causing mineral buildup.

Hard water can shorten the life of your pipes and lessen the effectiveness of certain cleaning agents. When hard water is heated, the carbonates precipitate out of solution, which forms scales in pipes. As a result, this will narrow and possibly clog your pipes. Scale prevents efficient heat transfer, so a water heater with scale will have to use a lot of energy to give you hot water.
