Idle in computer terms means the computer/application in inactive. In instant messaging this means that the idle user's computer is not being used and the person is most likely away. The "Idle" status is usually activated after a period of time when no computer activity (keyboard key strokes/mouse movement) has taken place to indicate that that person is away.
