Hi,

Brown spotting is known as old blood. When this occurs there is a possibility you could be pregnant. See your doctor for a blood test and also see your doctor to rule out a hormonal imbalance.

Ive had this problem on my last period.Only had brown spotting when i wiped and instead of only lasting for 5 normal days(for me)it lasted 11days.The 2periods before that my period lasted 9 days but it bleed red blood. And each period is getting lighter. They were also late.Pregnancy is not likely since i took a blood test and hpt.I took the blood test a little over a month ago. Took the hpt a few days ago. Yess i realize after a neg. blood test you'd think i wouldnt take a hpt but we havent been trying to get pregnant but havent really been preventing it. If it happens then great if it don't then great. I'm going to the doctor on the 29th but i juss wanted some input on what it could be.hormaonal imbalance is possible but im wondering why it juss started abruptly 3months ago.i did have a miscarriage a little over 3 months ago.But i figured it wouldnt affect my periods for 3months...

Any input??

Brown vaginal discharge is most often associated with old endometrial tissues. If your period is late you might get a brown, rather than red, discharge. It could also mean that for whatever reason during your last menses the entire uterine lining failed to make a timely exit. Brown Discharge may happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown. This may occur when you are ovulating in the middle of menstrual cycle.

Brown vaginal discharge can also be a symptom of a medical concern that is much more sinister than leftover endometrial cells. Some of these conditions include Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), menopause, sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, Chlamydia or genital warts) or Cervical cancer.

Sometimes brown discharge could appear during using birth control pills which is a side effect of pills.

It is called breakthrough bleeding, the color is brown because it is old blood. It is a very common side effect when taking the pill. If you are not on the pill, ask your doctor to ensure it's not a sign of something more serious. Luck to you.

Irregular periods and spotting in between periods is quite frequent among women. If it happens once in a while (meaning up to a couple times a year), it might not mean anything serious.

The brown color is due to old blood cells sometimes mixed in with discharge.

If it happens frequently, you should contact your doctor or gynecologist.

The above it true, but also a woman might have light bleeding when she is ovulating.

All of the above is true but its not serious if you have brown spots. After all the system is cleaning its self!

Spotting between periods could also mean that you are pregnant.

It could be a hormonal imbalance caused by weight gain or loss. It could be a reaction to medication you are taking (for example, SSRI meds can cause the symptoms you mentioned) or it could be a sign of a more serious condition. When in doubt, contact a medical professional! ~ T Be careful with this one. Brown spotting occurs with implantation (called implantation spotting) and although is not common with all pregnancies, it does occur with many. The spotting is when the cell mass emplants and burts micro blood vessels as it assimilates to the uterine wall. You ovulate typically 10 days prior to your period (as a mid point, I know it varies with the person) which means you are fertile for about two days before (as sperm lives for about two to three days depending on the pH) and three days after ovulation. Based on what you have written I would suspect that as you were spotting nine days before, and have missed your period, that you may be pregnant. This is most likely implantation bleeding. Implantation is the process of the fertilized egg becoming attached to the womb or uterus. In most cases, the egg is fertilized by a sperm in the fallopian tube. The fertilized egg, or embryo, reaches the blastocyst stage a few days after it is fertilized, and in the uterus will attach itself to the uterine lining. This is implantation - and implantation bleeding can be a result. Implantation bleeding, which is typically a brown discharge that may result in light spotting, will not necessarily appear with every pregnancy. If implantation is successful, the developing placenta will begin to produce the hormone hCG, which can be detected by a home pregnancy test. Implantation bleeding may appear as a light, brown spotting. It typically takes place a handful of days after ovulation.

All this means is that you're spotting. It's normal to experience spotting towards the end of your period, it's just where the uterine shedding is slowing down and the blood is taking longer to leave your body so going brown when old and mixing with discharge. Most women experience spotting.

It simply means that you're spotting, most people experience spotting before menstruation.
Menstruation doesn't have an on/off switch, it takes time for it to fully start.
