The dip tube (fuel pickup) in the gas tank may not go to the bottom of the tank so the car can run out of gas before it is low enough to trigger the low fuel light (my contour has this fault). From "out of gas" to all the way full, is about 11 gallons in my car.You may have a light burnt out in your dashboard that needs to be replaced.
