To work for the common good is to do things that are intended to benefit an entire society, rather than to just benefit yourself, or to just benefit some organization or group to which you belong.
Many people would live in Plato's ideal society because it focused on education and justice. People who believe in a democratic state may object to it though.

To live "principle-centered" would be to base the actions you take in life based on a set of rules. Doctors (the good ones) adhere to the guidelines codified by The American Medical Association. Journalists (the good ones) adhere to the Code of Ethics codified by The Society of Professional Journalists.You could say that these nice folks live "principle-centered" lives.
