The original term "gay" was used to denote Happiness. Up until around the mid-20th Century the term referred to a person being "care-free" "happy", and other emotions of some type of frivolity.
Today however, the term "gay" is generally used to refer to Homosexuals, usually Male, while the term Lesbian is used for the Female aspect of Homosexuality. Gay can still refer to both male or female, though more commonly it is used for Male Homosexuals.
Today also you will find the term "gay" being used towards something someone doesn't like or they find to be bad. For example, my step son was kicked out of school, when he told his friend what happened, his friends response was "that is so gay", this use is demeaning and denotes a bad thing. I don't like the use of "gay" in that term as it makes me feel like my being gay could also be referred to as a bad thing.

∙ 11y agoGay in the old days did mean happy, lively, or cheerful. Then it moved on to be known as two men who choose to have sex with other men. However, there were always underground usages of the term. It was first used in a sexual context among female prostitutes as confirmed by posters which predate the gay movement. Nowadays, in addition to the sexual orientation meaning, some people use the term gay as synonymous with stupid, eg., "That was a gay movie! It had no plot, no good actors in it, and I feel I just wasted $8 to see it."
