Hand-kissingFrom my own experience of 20+ years of hand kissing... nowadays in the 20th/21st Centuries most of the reservations and conventions of past times are irrelevant... the gentleman can indeed actually *kiss* the back of the lady's hand (not 'pretend to', or kiss his thumb, or just kiss the knuckles of the lady)......and it *is* acceptable for a gentleman to initiate a hand kiss by subtly offering his hand palm up, instead of palm straight as if for a handshake. That way the lady herself can choose whether to offer her hand palm down, wrist elegantly angled for a hand kiss or she can choose to opt for the handshake. Therefore no-one is shown disrespect and the lady herself is still in control of the situation.
These are essential progressions of the handkiss if this most chivalrous, delightful and romantic of gestures is to survive and flourish in the modern day.
Perhaps the following short motto, which I invented and I live by, is most appropriate when considering a handkiss...
"One shakes the hand of a woman, but kisses the hand of a Lady..."
AnswerI love the above answer but I think that, in this day and age, it is much more likely that the person was trying to impress you! It could be an indication that he thinks very highly of you. (Also, the book "The Shoes of the Fisherman" was one of the best I ever read!) Another Idea- He may have simply wanted to be "Swavay and De Boner" in a joking sort of way.
- He may have wanted to impress some young lady in the vicinity. And that lady could even be you!
