A professionally performed lip piercing will have very little swelling, because consideration was placed by the piercer in locating and providing the service in a manner that causes as little trauma to the area as possible. The piercing conducted using sterile equipment and a ultra sharp needle, assures that the resultant piercing is of the highest standard possible. A piercing done with incorrect methods and poor material will result in swelling and possible secondary infection due to the lack of sterilized equipment and poor area disinfection. Lacking proper knowledge in regards to anatomy and piercing placement can also lead to various secondary complications.

Actually, it is perfectly normal. Think about it. If you now have a hole that is completely through your lip, it will get swollen. It's your body's natural way of healing. If your neck gets swollen or if green stuff is coming out of your lip, that's not normal. How do I know? I've gotten my lip pierced.

Take some ibuprofen for swelling and pain. If you have severe redness, severe swelling, and/or a yellow or greenish discharge that smells bad, see a doctor for antibiotics because infection is possible.

I have spiderbites, and I got them done at different times and the I used a hoop for the first one, and a stud for the second one.

The hoop - It was swollen significantly. When I went to sleep the piercing would try to heal around the hoop, so when I woke up I would have to turn my lip ring and a ring of skin would come off around it... VERY PAINFUL.

The Stud - I had no swelling, and little to know pain. It healed very fast and I changed stud after about... 2 weeks.

I highly recommend a stud for your lip piercings.

Well, a piercing is a wound any which way you think about them. Some swelling is normal while it heals. If it's red and tender, the you've probably got an infection there. The sensible thing in that situation is to remove the piercing which'll help the infection to clear up. Unfortunately that is likely to let the piercing close up, so if you still think it's such a nice idea you'll have to redo it once your lip is OK.

Yes, and since it is a dangerous procedure, it should be done with sterlized instruments to prevent a general infection. This procedure can cause harm to your teeth and your gums.

It's completely normal, all it means is your lip is healing. It should take 3 to 4 months to fully heal, however if your lip continues to swell after a few days then you might have a problem.

Take out the piercing and soak it in hydrogen peroxide. The put the peroxide on a cotton ball and clean where the piercing was. Afterwards, put the lip ring back in.

Is it normal for the inside of a lip piercing to become a large sore or for the back of a stud to go inside of my lip?

Becoming swollen and sore after getting the piercing is usually common. What is uncommon is the stud sinking into your lip. You probably need to go back to the piercer and get a different type of jewelry.
