It is possible that your alternator might be going out. It also could be a problem with your battery. You should have it checked by a professional or you could be stranded .

Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. This should reset it. If it comes back on, you have a problem with the engine management system.

you can disconnect the negative cable at the battery for at least 30 seconds. if the problem is intermittent, the light will be out afterwards. if it comes right back on, seek a shop that does engine diag.
