You need to hook up a scanner to read the code, or disconnect and reconnect the battery to see if it will reset. but more then likely its a speed sensor plug vary common problem

my check engine light stays on and the o/d light blinks....what could this mean?
A malfunction has been detected
OD means Overdrive. The light is on because you have disengaged the Overdrive. The button is on the shift lever on the side. Push that button to engage the overdrive.
The transmission has set a code and you need to get it checked.
overdrive light blinks when there is a problem in the transmission. take it to a good transmission repairer, as soon as you can to be fixed, or it will leave you broke down on the road somewhere
The overdrive light blinks when the computer senses a transmission problem. (IE. Torque Converter failure) The reason it feels like it downshifts is due to the computer putting the transmission into a fail-safe mode to reduce further transmission damage.
Overdrive on is the normally allowed position , if the overdrive switch is pushed that is located on the end of the gearshift lever the word OFF is supposed to light up
Even after pushing the overdrive cancel button again ? to allow the overdrive feature On my Ford Explorer with the column shift automatic , the overdrive switch is on the end of the gear selector lever
Hit the button on the end of shift lever, which takes it out of overdrive.
Overdrive is the normally allowed position , but if you don't want the transmission to shift into overdrive push the button on the end of your gearshift lever ( P R N etc. ) Your O/D OFF light will light up in the dash .
Nothing on 99 but 96 Contour has a red LED that blinks (a tiny light) on the driver-side dash vent next to door. This LED blinks on-off continuously when armed.
