For example, a dream about a bare tree in the middle of the winter woodland would mean something quite different than a dream about a springtime tree bursting into beautiful blossoms or a summertime tree heavy with fruit. Yet again, a young sapling would mean something very different in a dream than a gnarled old tree.

It essentially represents the forces of Nature fighting back against those who abuse them. The dream might reflect your own distress over environmental issues or possibly a reaction to one particular tree's destruction. Alternatively, the trees might represent a factor that was assumed to be neutral, that has surprised you with apparent hostility. For example, at the time this question is posted (winter 2014) the weather in much of the northern hemisphere is unusually bitter and cold.
