What does it mean when your engine clicks when you try to start it?

It could very well mean your battery is dead. A good suggestion is to try another battery which is known to be good and/or carefully try to jumpstart the vehicle with jumper cables and another battery.

It sounds like you may have a dead battery. Have you tried getting a jump?

A single click and no response from the starter usually indicates a faulty starter relay/solenoid switch. It could also be a loose connection on the battery cable.

Dead battery? try jumping it off. bad starter solenoid? bad starter?

your number of clicks inproves the higher the rank because you need more clicks when you try to get to a higher rank

i might be wrong but it could be the 'bendex'. this is the part of the starter motor that disengages it after the engine turns on. it might not be fully disengaged from the previous trip. sometimes all that is needed to get it to go is to rock the car foreward or back a little. hope that helps.

Try and turn the Impreza engine over by hand. The engine could be locked up and not let the starter turn it over.

To do double clicks it is first easiest to start out pushing off from a table or high surface so you can jump really high. Then while you are jumping try to click your heels twice. It helps if your toes are pointed and feet are turned out. Once you can get the clicks by pushing off a surface try to then do it on your own. It takes a lot of practice but eventually you will be able to get it.

It clicks? What are you talking about clicking? you turn the key to start the car and all it will do is click, click! or when you try to start it it will spin over and then stop and click.! All I can think of if your car battery isn't good enough to start the car and you will get a click or you have a bad starter and it will only click. need more info

I would say that you seized the engine by running it too long without enough oil in the crankcase. The reason the starter just clicks is that the engine is locked up, and when you try to start it, the engine cannot turn over.

A single click is usually a bad starter. A series of fast clicks is usually a weak battery.
