For colleges and universities that operate on a regular semester system. One credit is equal to 16 hours of class contact time for the semester. This is broken down into hours per week. Thus, a one credit would be one hour of class contact time each week for the length of the semester. A three credit course would be 48 hours of class contact time (16 x 3) for the semester. This would be three hours of class contact time per week. To make this easier, when you see a course is three credits, you know the class will meet three hours per week. After successful completion of the semester, you will have earned three credits toward your degree. If the course is one credit, then the class will meet one hour per week, and at the end of the semester you will have earned one credit toward your degree.

Each class in college is worth a certain number of "credit hours" which often relates to the number of hours that the students have that class per week (but not always). In order to graduate, colleges and universities require a certain number of credit hours. Hope this helps! Dr. B.

There is info (some of which is listed below) at the flwg link: www.dbu.edu/academics/policies/credit_hour.aspqte . . . . Credit Hour

The credit hour is the basic unit of measure for college credit. Most courses at Dallas Baptist University are offered for three semester hours of college credit. This means that the student invests the equivalent of three hours per week in the formal instruction process for each three-hour course. The student should invest much more actual time than this for each three-hour course in order to complete the necessary library and preparatory work for formal instruction periods. Laboratory classes are exceptions to this example as are certain music classes and other classes that require the development of various skills. . . . . unqte More at the supplied link. Hope it helps.

Consider that a full time student takes a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester, with minimum two semesters per year. That equals 24 credit hours per year, 48 in two years. So, a college student with 46 credit hours is still a sophomore. A different perspective puts a 46 hour student as a Junior (30-50 credit hours).
