Derived from Greek μελαινα (melaina) meaning "black, dark". This was the name of a Roman saint who gave all her wealth to charity in the 5th century. Melanie comes from the Greek name St. Melania a Greek heiress who gave all her money to charity in the 5th century. Melania also freed slaves.

pretty sure it derives from the primary language, which is proto-uralic. lana means daughter and as with every other primary language ma/me directly meaning me, mine or my. so I would take a guess at it meaning my-daughter. as for the IA at the end I'm not sure considering that suffix generally describes a state of health or sickness.
