A sweetly written poem 'Grandmother' has three stanzas which is composed by Ray Young Bear. His principal theme is the contemporary American India's search for identity. In this poem he draws the picture of his granny. He describes about his granny and seems he is missing her.

In this poem the speaker describes about the shape, smell, touch, voice and feelings about the person who is his granny. He talks about the shape as she was wearing purple scarf and she had a plastic shopping bag and if he would see her from mile away , he would surely recognize her. He describes about the touch as he said that he would know her if she would keep her warm and damp hand on his head. She was so loving and caring. He could hear her voice coming from rock means the granny was everywhere. If she would speak something, the voice would pass in his mind to his heart which tells us that it would be so inspirational. The words would flow inside the poet like light which simply means knowledge. He compaired his words with the ashes from a sleeping fire at night which would give a bright light of knowledge in this poem light means knowledge and positivity where night means ignorance and innocence.

The poem grandmother has described all the five sense. He loves her and stills remembers her so much. He has got light by his granny. He was very close to his granny. All the granny are old, loving, caring and their walking and talking styles are same. They have got no jelousy and all granny are very hard working.

Ray Young Bear’s “Grandmother” deals with the love dipped in reverence for one’s grandmother. The speaker recollects his grandmother and tries to draw her realistic picture by using different images charged with emotional values. In his description, his grandmother is all-loving and all-inspiring. Though she is no more, he still remembers her and expresses his love and respect for her.

The speaker describes her physical and emotional traits. He recollects her remarkable shape, sound, touch of warm and damp hands with the smell of roots, and inspiring words of guidance. His memory of her is very fresh and lively. If he were to see her, he would recognize her even from a mile away. If he felt the hands on his head, he would know her warm and damp hands with the smell of roots. If he heard a voice coming from the gravestone, he would know her inspiring and striking words, which would follow inside him like the flashing of the sleeping fire in the dark winter night.

The speaker successfully draws a simple, hardworking, all-loving and all-inspiring portrait of his grandmother by using sensual images and metaphor as well as simile. “Purple scarf” and “plastic shopping bag” refer to visual image, “warm” and “damp” to tactile image (touch), “smell of roots” to olfactory image (smell), and “voice” to auditory image. Similarly, metaphor of “rock” and “flow” to refer to grandmother’s gravestone and flow of her words, and simile of “like the light……” make the description intense and appealing. And at the same time she has a symbolic connection to the oldest part of the earth- “a voice coming from the rock”. By talking about his grandmother the poet seeks to establish his identity as a member of American-Indian Mesquaki tribal people.
