The word 'alps' simply means mountains - usually the highest mountain range in a given country. For example, many people know of the majestic Swiss Alps, but not so many realise that the highest part of the Great Diving Range in Australia is known as the Australian Alps - which is possibly a little pretentious, given that these mountains are of far lower elevation than those of many other countries. Nonetheless, because they form the highest mountain range in Australia, they are known as the Alps.
