Currently the territory is in de facto control of the Militant Hamas Organization which has severed ties with the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Gaza, by virtue of this is de facto an independent country, although no country recognizes it and most see it as an integral part of any future Palestinian State.

The Gaza Strip has been ruled by the Hamas Government since 2007. Previously Egypt had brokered a peace agreement between Hamas and Israel, but that truce agreement lapsed in December of 2008. Since then, there have been military attacks from both sides at the other with seemingly no end in sight to the conflict. According to many news sources, tensions are still high and the many efforts to revive peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel have resulted in naught.
