What is the mockingjay?

It's about Katniss and her friends rebelling against the Capitol. They move to District 13 and become soldiers.

It is a combination of a Mockingbird and a Jabberjay. The Jabberjay is a mutation created by the Capitol, and it was used to listen in on the rebel conversations, and then repeat them for the Capitol in the Dark Days. When the rebels started feeding the capitol lies, the capitol abandoned the jabberjays, hoping they would become extinct. They eventually did become extinct, but not before they mated with mockingjays.

The mockingjays also serve as a symbol- of hope and the rebellion. Katniss Everdeen is symbolized as the mockingjay, and often dresses like one to promote the rebels.
