It was origionated to slow and then stop the flow of communism without waging war. Kind of like the function of the United Nations. It's opposing organization is SEATO. (South East Asia Treaty Organization)

After WWII the nations in the region of the NORTH ATLANTIC created a TREATY ORGANIZATION (NATO) to protect themselves from Communist (Soviet) aggression. The Soviets countered with their WARSAW PACT forces. SEATO aligned themselves along NATO lines in Asia (South East Asia Treaty Organization). All of these organizations were cold war related.
