This blue colour was one of the symbols of the Capetian kings dynasty. According to the legend, it is the colour of the military cloak Saint Martin of Tours cut and gave to a scantily dressed beggar on his way to Amiens. It then became part of the royal flag along with the lily flowers, which then got incorporated into the flag of Paris.
