Substances can move in and out of a cell in several ways. Diffusion is when a substance will distribute itself in or out of a cell until the distribution on both sides of the cell is balanced. Active transport is when a cell transports a substance across the cell membrane that would not normally be able to pass through. Osmosis is the movement of water from areas with few dissolved dissolved substances to areas with high dissolved substances.
Embedded in the semi-permeable cell membrane are many different types of carrier proteins or channel proteins. These globular proteins allow the transport of specific substances from the outside of the cell into the cell or vice versa.Specific means each protein can only transport one type of substance across. For example, Protein A can transport Substance X but not Substance Y. Substance Y has to be transported by Protein B which cannot transport Substance X. The specific nature of these globular proteins mean it is easier for these molecules to be transported.
Cells need to regulate each substance so its import and export is controlled. If there would be one mechanism to import every substance, the concentration of any individual molecule couldn't be controlled.

Osmosis and simple diffusion are not sufficient for the transport of all substances due to their nature. They only have the ability to transport substances which can pass through the cell membrane.
