The medulla oblongata is the part of the brain that controls autonomic functions. Some of the functions that it controls are digestion, breathing, heart function, and swallowing.

It is the central part of the hair, made up of large loosely connected cells which contain Keratin . Sometimes the medulla is not continuous in a hair. It isn't in fine hair and it serves no purpose in hairdressing.

The word medulla means the middle of something. Usually in the health profession the term medulla is used to refer to the medulla oblongata. The lower portion of the brainstem (brainstem includes the middle brain, pons, and medulla oblongata), which controls visceral functions of the body, such as heart rate, breathing/respiration, and blood pressure.
