It means "in every way possible".

Such as using every method possible in trying to find an answer to a question.

Having every possible exit or means of escape blocked.

"I knew it was over, they had us covered six ways to Sunday".

Also referred to as "Six ways from Sunday" or even "Eight ways to Sunday".
