Buddha only idenitifed the way to enlightenment. There is nothing to stop a person from independently reaching the same conclusions, in which case he or she could strive for enlightenment without ever hearing of the Buddha. Unlike Christianity where Jesus is necessary for salvation, the Buddha is not a required belief for enlightenment in Buddhism. As Zen Biddhists put it,"If you meet the Buddha on the road- kill him.".
