When a miscarriage begins, the first thing you might notice is lower Back pain

that is constant and/or sharp. Lower back pain is usually followed by mild or severe abdominal cramps. You may experience spotting for the first few days. The bleeding that occurs might be dark or bright red and will be very heavy. It may seem like a normal period, not to heavy and not too light or you might feel gushes of blood and may soak a pad within an hour. You may notice small or large clots and grayish tissue.

I have had a misscarraige at 7 weeks. First you get a really heavy period - and I MEAN HEAVY. So heavy, you cannot walk. After about 5 hours after heavy bleeding you begin to pass the placenta, which looks like a thin, large, stretchy clot. You will notice that this looks different from a normal period clot, as the placenta is filled with viens. The next morning I passed what looked like a red kidney bean. This bean was covered in veins. I found out later that the baby was inside of this. You will also bleed for about 2 weeks after.

depends how far you are. I passed mine after 10 wks pregnant, but believe it died a few weeks prior because of how small it appeared on the ultrasound. It came out completely intact in amniotic sac with placenta attached to it (think small water balloon, gross, yes... but interesting to witness) You'll mainly find a lot of large blood clots and blood stained whitish tissue, and maybe stringy mucusy blood.

The bleeding slows to more like a period within 24 hours. If you are having a lot of bleeding go to the emergency department.

It is possible to miscarry one baby whilst having conceived another one?

Definitely! If you conceive twins it is possible to miscarry one and bring the other to full term. Very early on in the pregnancy it is possible for the second fetus to be "reabsorbed" into the tissue of the uterus. But the most common is when you have bleeding like a miscarriage but find out you are still pregnant.
