Cookies are small text files sent by a server, or web site, to store information on your computer. The next time you go to that site, or log on to that server, your computer sends that same cookie back to the server unchanged. Cookies are mostly used for authentication, keeping track of user information (preferences), and state maintenance (since the internet is a state-less protocol). Cookies, are not however, programs, but only date represented by text.

Computer cookies, do not form an acronym. They are called cookies, as in a biscuit. It is something that is offered as a good will jesture or to win you over to stay a while. In the same way you may treat a child.

These computer data files are meant to make things run a bit sweeter and are left behind on your computer as a free gift. (like a cookie for Santa) Not always welcome or asked for.
