It can really effect your computer. I got a worm virus on my Dell and it wiped my Windows Vista out and my computer won't start up. It attacks the hard drive. Every time you start your PC a "Seek Failure Diskette 0" pops up. So get rid of them if you get a warning for one.

worm is a small piece of software that uses computer networks and security holes to replicate itself. A copy of the worm scans the network for another machine that has a specific security hole. It copies itself to the new machine using the security hole, and then starts replicating from there, as well.

What is a difference between a worm and a virus?

A virus is a program that is designed to spread from file to file on a single PC, it does not intentionally try to move to another PC, and it must replicate, and execute itself to be defined as a virus. A worm is designed to copy itself (intentionally move) from PC to PC, via networks, internet etc. A worm doesnt need a host file to move from system to system, whereas a virus does. So worms spread more rapidly then viruses. The word 'Virus' has become a common term a lot of people use to refer to worms and trojans too. Which is not exactly correct.

What are the charateristics of a virus?

Strictly speaking, a virus adds its code to other executables to infect them (and thus spread), such that the virus code runs when the infected program(s) are run. Often, the term "virus" is used in a less formal context to mean any kind of malware, including viruses themselves as well as worms, trojans, etc.
