Apparently Indians inhabiting the area marked a landmark or border with a "red stick" of sorts. Early Europeans to the area called it "Baton Rouge" which is French for red stick. Check more info. at http://lookforsite.com/hair/baton_rouge.HTML

I think that before the French, Baton Rouge had another name. The name of Baton rouge had to be some sort of other Indian tribe name right?

jakashia- yes Baton rouge did have another name before the french it was called Istrouma. i know this because i live in BR and they make us learn this stuff. lol especially if you got to istrouma high school or istrouma baptist church
Because the Indians (or native Americans) inhabiting the area marked a landmark or border with a "red stick" of sorts. Early Europeans to the area called it "Baton Rouge" which is French for red stick. Baton rouge did have another name before the french it was called Istrouma. which also means red stick in native American (don't know which tribe)

Louisiana was named after Louis XIV, King of France from 1643-1715. When René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle claimed the territory drained by the Mississippi River for France, he named it La Louisiane, meaning "Land of Louis". (Wikipedia)
