However, habitat loss (by deforestation), humans (traditional medicine usage), and the wildlife trade (exotic pets) are the greatest causes of their decline. All five species are listed on the IUCN Red List as either "Vulnerable" or "Endangered". They are protected (but not very well) from commercial international trade under Appendix I of CITES. Even local trade is illegal. However, their very cuteness targets them for the illegal exotic pet trade, especially in Japan and particularly among women.
