Some people liked him because basically he won the war and some people were still looking at all the inhumane crimes Stalin did. But most people were afraid to say anything and they were showing their love towards Stalin. Made him a demigod. 1500 people died at his funeral because of the massive mob of men, women, and children that were there (they were trampled to death).
