The original Ku Klux Klan formed out of the disbanded confederate army and they became a resistance force against federal control of southern land. Formed in desperation, they often resorted to violence and intimidation tactics resulting in the infamous lynchings that became quite common in the 1870's South. Contrary to popular belief, the original Ku Klux Klan was more focused on the intimidation of unfavorable politics rather than other races, and would commonly lynch white people who supported the Republican party as well as blacks.
