The Napoleonic Wars had many effects on the European community, as well as the world. Perhaps the most significant for the subsequent one hundred years was the rise of the British Empire to super-power status: without any significant rival on land or sea (with the possible exception of Imperial Russia on land), the British Empire dominated world affairs until the start of the Great War in 1914.
