There are 2 nitrogens, 4 hydrogens, and 3 oxygens because of the subscripts for the H and O. There are 2 Nitrogens because there is one in each polyatomic ion. NH4NO3<<--- there are two Nitrogens, one in the ammonium and one nitrate. There are four hydrogens, hence the subscript. And finally there are 3 oxygens, also hence the subscript.
