They didn't want to involve themselves with a war that was none of their business - joining the war would've meant spending a lot of money on resources, putting the US back into recession.

The only reason America did eventually join the war was due to retaliation - they wanted revenge for the December 7th Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941. Great Britain, Canada, Australia, France, and other allied nations were already fighting in Europe and Africa as early as 1939.

Depending upon the war or situation. WWI - we got involved due to the assassinations of allied government leaders. WWII - we were attacked and were not about to let that go unanswered. Our involvement was only a matter of time anyway - we would not have stood by and let Hitler murder so many people whether Pearl Harbor happened of not. Korea/Vietnam - we have been trying to stop the spread of Communism for years and these were 2 more steps in that effort. 9/11 - again - we were attacked and we could not let that go unanswered. Neutrality may have been our intent many times - but we do not always have that option due to the actions of other countries.
