I find walking helps.

I also find it gets worse if I have a lie-in and spend more than about 8 1/2 hours in bed.

Potential ReliefStand close to a wall for support...While supporting yourself on the non affected leg, turn your toes out and lift your affected leg backwards slightly and hold. This is to try balance the active tone of the piriformis muscle. You may have to play with the degree of lift, but this should provide you relief.

In a certain percentage of the population, the sciatic nerve runs right through the middle of the piriformis muscle. This is a muscle that runs from the outside of the femur (the greater trochanter)to the sacrum (the center of the posterior pelvis and the base of the spine.) If this muscle is too lengthened or too shortened, it can cause compression or pressure on the sciatic nerve. This will produce the symptoms along the nerve pathway.

A chiropractor can help to balance the spine and therefore the gluteal muscles. Your problem may be more than muscular compression on the sciatic nerve, and a chiropractor will be able to assess the issue, whatever the causitive mechanism.

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by a number of factors, including impingement on the sciatic nerve. Exercise is extremely helpful in relieving pain caused by sciatica. Most exercises that engage the core, gluteus muscles and hamstrings can be used to treat sciatica as part of a pain management plan. These exercises should be done daily and combined with a stretching routine. Flexibility training will serve to release pressure and relax the muscles surrounding the sciatic nerve.

Traditional exercises and home treatments don't work because they fail to fix the physical problem and only provide temporary relief. Sciatica is just a symptom of something affecting your sciatic nerve to cause the pain and discomfort. A chiropractor can help get to the root of the problem and help align your body correctly to prevent the pain from reoccurring.

According to Chinese medicine, sciatica is typically caused by Qi and Blood stagnation along the Gallbladder or Bladder meridians. Other systems of medicine have different explanations for the pain, but TCM is very effective in relieving sciatica by relieving the Qi stagnation through many techniques including acupuncture, herbs, and tui-na medical massage. Yoga is considered an energetic exercise method that maintains the free flow of Qi throughout the body, and with regular practice would likely clear up sciatica. Qigong exercises like Tai Qi might also be beneficial.

Sciatica causes intense pain that can radiate from the lower back through the buttocks and back of the legs. Home treatments for sciatica relief include bed rest, applying a heating pad to the painful area and taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. In addition, other home treatments for sciatica relief include applying ice to the back, avoiding sudden movements and using a topical analgesic cream. When sciatica pain becomes severe or is unresponsive to home treatments, a physician may need to be consulted who can recommend an effective treatment for sciatica relief.
