There are two main types: Cartesian coordinates and Polar
coordinates.
In n-dimensional Cartesian coordinates there are n axes which
are [usually] orthogonal and which meet at a single point called
the origin. The coordinates of any point in the n-space are defined
by the ordered n-tuple whose terms refer to the distances of the
point, from the origin, along each of the axes.
In n-dimensional Polar coordinates, the point is located using
its distance from the origin and the angles that this radial line
makes with specified lines and planes.

Think of any figure, with any shape, on the graph with the
origin inside the shape.
Now think of any point inside the shape (except the origin).
Now, in your imagination, slowly and carefully turn the shape
180 degrees around the origin ...
as if it were stuck to the origin with a pin, and you gave it
1/2 turn on the pin.
What happened to the point you were thinking of ?
If the point started out some distance to the right of
the y-axis, it wound up the same distance
to the left of the y-axis.
And if it started out some distance above the x-axis, it
wound up the same distance below the x-axis.
So ... any point that starts out at the coordinates ( x , y
) before the 1/2 turn, winds up
at the coordinates ( -x , -y ) after the 1/2 turn.

### What gives the coordinates of the location of a point?

The coordinate plane in 2-dimensional space has one point which
is the origin. This point is usually denoted by the letter O and
has coordinates (0, 0). There are usually two mutually
perpendicular axes - one horizontal and one vertical. The first
coordinate of any point is the distance of the point, in the
horizontal direction, from the vertical axis. The second is its
distance, in the vertical direction, from the horizontal axis.
In space with 3 or more dimensions the coordinates are defined
in an analogous manner.

You can find the distance to a point by applying the Pythagorean
theorem:
Square the x coordinate and add it to the square of the
y - coordinate of the point.
Now take the square root of your answer.
The result is the straight line distance from the origin to the
point.
