When the outsiders who were given lands by the government got migrated to the place, they looked at the buffaloes for hunting and sport. So eventually the factor that contributed to the destruction of southern buffalo herds is that trainloads of tourists killed buffalo purely for sport.

The factor that contributed the most to the destruction of the southern buffalo herds was the white settlers who came in the 1800s and battled with the Native Americans in various ways. A related factor was the over-hunting (sometimes on purpose) of the buffalo by the white settlers.Trainloads of tourists killed buffalo purely for sport, and the buffalo were also hunted for their hides and to diminish the power of the Native Americans.
