The settlers were not prepared for winter, most were searching for gold, and they did not know how to successfully hunt or grow things in America. The settlers were also those people who refused to work even if their life depended on it, which in this case it did.

When the 104 men built the fort on the James River they picked the worse spot in the area. They were in an empire of 15,000 Native Americans, but for the most part they were left alone because they knew the men would soon die. They were right. Within 6 months there were only 34 men left alive. They died of starvation, disease, bad water, and accidents. One of the most famous residents was John Smith. He didn't last very long because while he was sleeping gunpowder was sprinkled on him and lit. He had to return home for medical attention of his burns. Later, he wrote a book about his adventures, but lied throughout the entire book.
