Probably the single most overwhelming factor can be summarized as: we've got this thing, we've spent hundreds of millions of dollars (back when that was real money) developing it, and we're not going to use it?
The US Military projections for an invasion of Japan, especially the Japanese civilian casualties expected, was likely also a factor. It's certainly arguable that, given what the US knew at the time, the bombs were by far the more humane course of action.

Based on the information that he had, yes. Japan had refused to surrender, invasion of Japan would have cost several million lives, and it DID end the war.
