The chance of a wound becoming infected depends on the nature, size, and depth of the wound; its proximity to and involvement of nonsterile areas, such as the skin and gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

The outside environment : A moist environment allows wounds to heal faster and less painfully than a dry environment, in which cells typically dehydrate and die. This causes a scab or crust to form over the wound site, which impedes healing.

Wounds can be prevented from healing if they are not cared for properly. One of the biggest problems with a wound is keeping it from becoming infected, so to prevent this make sure to keep it clean. This can be accomplished through several methods: washing with soap and water, and rubbing it with hydrogen peroxide to clean it. This should be done right away when you are cut, and then put a bandage over it to keep it clean.

A wound can also be kept from healing if you do not leave it alone when a scab is forming.
