The death of his mother and brother.

Poe was influenced to write poetry at first before short stories in part because he was a great admirer of the poetry of the British poet Lord Byron. Poe's first works were poems rather than short stories.

Edgar Allan Poe's tumultuous life, marked by personal tragedies, poverty, and struggles with mental health, deeply influenced his writing. Themes of death, despair, and madness that permeate his works can be seen as reflections of his own experiences and emotions. His complex relationship with loss, grief, and the human psyche shaped the gothic and macabre elements that characterize his stories and poems.

Most of Poe's writings were depressing, this was probably on set by the sickness of his wife ,Virginia His wife became ill with tuberculosis. He encouraged her to sing, but in 1842, one year after the release of ' The Murder in the Rue Morgue". His wife's sickness also led him to drinking which he denied of ever doing. But though he did work for a magazine he was offered to be paid a very large amount for each of his stories he published, this would probably encourage anyone to write. So when these things started happening at the same time, he probably took his depression, turned it into a story, got the money, and started over again This is not true facts, but I have researched some of this information up, and then took these things and started my own theory of what started his writings.

Poe lived a very hard and depressing life. His mother died when he was very young. The Allan's then took him in. Mr. Allan never truly showed much warm emotions toward him and did not support his writing. A friend's mother seemed to be the first person to understand him, she died very soon after meeting Poe. He married his cousin who died of the same disease that took his mother. He was going to marry his first love but died before he could. He may have thought death followed him (I left out quite a bit that was pretty bad because I wanted to make this point alone). These things and more lead him to a very deep depression and at least slight insanity that came through often in his writing.

Poe lived a tough and morbid life, therefore it greatly influenced his writing. He constantly wrote about women and death, two constants in his life. He wrote 'The Masque of the Red Death' about TB, the disease that killed many people in his life. Also, Poe's slow creeping insanity drove him to write 'The Tell-Tale Heart.'
