The most vile thing about Russia. It's dreaded winter. So the French Imperial Army defeated the army, but not mother nature. When a huge fire broke out in the city, started by the Russian resistance in the city, there was little food left or clean and few nearby cities that weren't sacked, so the only way to go was allied Poland(called the grand duchy of Warsaw then). Some 40,000 men died on the way.
As in WW2 the Russians had 2 great Generals: General January & General February.
Napoleon did not prepare his army for the winter in Russia. He also had:
* An over extended supply line. * The scorched earth withdrawal by the Russians. * The refusal of the Russians to engage in a decisive battle. * Bad weather.
Napoleon's battles on the way to Moscow were not defeats, nor were they decisive wins. Both sides claimed Borodino as a victory and it was bloody and costly for both sides without a clear win. Napoleon's defeat began when he could find no Russian Army to engage. He was forced to retreat over the same scorched earth with a hungry army in the Russian winter that was ill prepared for such a journey. His troops were harassed and ambushed every step of the way.
the scorched earth policy- where the Russians fled from napoleon back into their land, as napoleon followed them, they burned all the cities and crops so he couldn't have any, eventually he had to turn around with many men dead already, the Russians stormed them in a surprize attack and won.
Napoleon began his invasion of Russia on 23 June 1812, and his defeat began with his withdrawal from Moscow.
