Slavery was a big cause in the Haitian revolution. Although there were many revolts in the new world, only two accounts, the American Revolution and the Haitian Revolution, achieved liberation of slavery. The Influence of the French Revolution in terms of the watchwords of Liberty, Fraternity and Equality. These watchwords were internalized by the enslaved population of Saint Domingue because of their strong desire to be free.

The French Revolution, the American Revolution and the Enlightenment. This was because freedom and equality of all (John Locke) was stressed and since most all of the population of Haiti was black, they revolted for equal rights and independence from France. They eventually got both.
