The factors which limit and control cell growth is the growth factor which is secreted by other cells to tell surrounding cells that they need to grow and divide. Another factor which limits cell growth is the number of cells in a surrounding area. This is called density-dependent inhibition factor. If the there enough cells in a specific area and no more are needed, then the cells will continue to function but not reproduce.

What limits the growth is actually really simple. 1: the DNA cannot send the information it needs to for the cell to work properly if it gets beyond the limit, this is the informationrisis, 2: The surface to volume ratio does not increase equally the volume increases much faster than the surface area of the cell membrane. This is like the air going into a balloon the more air goes in the more the balloon is streached when to much air goes in the balloon cant contain the air so it pops.

The surface area, which is a squared function, to the volume, which is a cubic function. So, a cell grown too big would not be able to transport needed nutrients throughout the cell where needed.
