No force is needed to move an object. Force is needed to accelerate it.

If you pick the acceleration you want to achieve, then the force you'll need is

directly proportional to the mass of the object.

To put it another way: It takes more force to accelerate a truck than it takes

to accelerate a little red wagon at the same rate.

Forward motion, even the smallest tap could send something going forever, but then there is gravity and friction, which would stop it eventually.

Look at the formula for gravitation - the factors are all there. Anyway, the force depends on the mass of the first object, the mass of the second object, and the distance.

Some of the factors are:

  • the mass of the object
  • other forces acting on the object
  • the angle at which the force is applied.

What factors affect work?

Work is done when an object moves in the direction in which a force is applied to it. So the factors are the magnitude and direction of the applied force and the factors which affect the object's motion. The latter will include the mass of the object and friction (including drag).
