In West Side Story, the 1961 musical about two street gangs from New York (Jets and Sharks). Maria's boyfriend was Chino, a member of the Sharks. Maria was a Jets girl.

The musical "West Side Story" opens with a confrontation between two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are the kids whose parents grew up in the neighborhood, and they are all of various European extractions. The Sharks, on the other hand, are the kids of mostly newly-arrived immigrants from Puerto Rico.
Because the old leader of Sharks killed the old leader of the jets.
