The National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, was written by Francis Scott key during the war of 1812 while being held captive on a British ship. It was not chosen as our national anthem until the first time the US went to the Olympics in 1896. The Olympic committee said we needed an anthem to play if we won- so we chose the Star Spangled Banner over America the Beautiful. Good thing we had a national anthem after that, because we owned everyone there.
