What allows you to manipulate data in Excel?

You can manipulate data in many ways with a spreadsheet like
Excel. Mainly it is done using formulas and functions. You can also
use some of the databasing capabilities, like Filters, to do it, or
you could use Pivot Tables to help you analyse the same data in
different ways. There are many other built in ways of doing it,
like sorting, goal seeking, solvers, scenarios, macros, formatting,
validating and many other things. There is a huge amount that can
be done with spreadsheets, so there are all sorts of ways of
manipulating data using them.

Difference between Abstract data type and Data structure?

ADT is a logical description and data structure is
concrete. ADT is the logical picture of the data and the operations
to manipulate the component elements of the data. Data structure is
the actual representation of the data during the implementation and
the algorithms to manipulate the data elements. ADT is in the
logical level and data structure is in the implementation
level.

Why do people use spreadsheets instead of a calculator and a word doc?

There are many things that one can do easily with Microsoft
Excel which can not be done using Microsoft Word and/or a
calculator. These are far too numerous to list. Two quick and
simple examples: using a spreadsheet you can filter data to show
only the information you are interested in at a given point, or you
can sort your data in to any new order that suits your need with
only a few clicks of the mouse.
The ways in which you can manipulate data with a spreadsheet
range from the simple (as above) to the highly complex.
The short answer is that Excel / spreadsheets allow you to store
and manipulate data in ways that Word / word documents were not
designed to do.
